WYD pilgrims stranded at NAIA
Flights to Istanbul were cancelled on Saturday disrupting travel plans of hundreds of passengers including a group of Filipino pilgrims attending the World Youth Day in Poland.
More than a hundred WYD delegates from the Manila archdiocese were supposed to depart Manila via Turkish Airline at 9:30pm but the political tension in Turkey grounded all flights to the country.
“They can’t fly tonight but they were told that the airline will find a way so they can leave,” Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle said.
The cardinal made the statement during a concert for the youth attending the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE) at the UST in Manila on Saturday evening.
A send-off Mass presided over by Cardinal Tagle was held yesterday for the delegates.
Tagle also called on Catholics to pray for Turkey and for the victims of recent terror attacks in France, Baghdad, and Bangladesh.
“There are young people in France and Turkey who want to celebrate something like this but they can’t do it. Let’s pray for them,” he said.
Some 1,500 young Filipinos are expected to attend this year’s WYD celebrations with Pope Francis in Krakow, including 320 participants from the CBCP’s Commission on Youth. (CBCPNews)
